For those looking for a minimalist approach to dressing up for Vishu, we put together a festive look that underscores a classic, clean way of styling the Silver Kasavu.
This year, Vishu falls on April 14th. Billed as the Malayali's new year, the festival signifies auspicious beginnings. The festival falls on the first day of the Malayalee month of Medam. As a child, my memories of Vishu involve a bleary eyed younger me being woken up at dawn, being told to keep my eyes shut, and instructed to only open them when told to do so. This was to ensure that the first thing I saw on Vishu was the Vishukanni - the lit up lamp in the puja corner that my parents had set up overnight, along with some jewellery, an assortment of grains and vegetables to signify wealth and prosperity for the household. I would then receive my kaineetam- usually small amount of coins- as a gift from the elders.
I always associate the smell of sugar and ghee with Vishu, with my mum frying Unniappams the night before. I wasn't very fond of them when I was a kid and you should see me now in front of a bowl of Unniappams.
Now on to the subject of dressing up for Vishu. Kasavus are the preferred sarees among Malayalee women and Kasavu Mundus among Malayalee men on this day. These aren't steadfast rules, of course. It's a free country:) If you love a more minimalist approach to festive dressing, then pairing a monochrome palette saree blouse with your silver kasavu would look really stylish. We put our new black and white striped handloom cotton saree blouse to the test at our recent shoot and loved how Susha styled it here. She chose a sleek upswept bun, light highlights on her cheekbones and we added our Labrodorite Sparklers to the look along with our bestselling Silver Kasavu with a 4 inch border.
